He pours honey in my ear before bed
the sweetness of his words lingers in my dreams
He knows me well
I prayed for him,
Over sage smoke,
Smudged his existence into my locks
Until he appeared
Sugasaphire, "His Arrival"
Who is Sugasaphire?
Kila 'Sugasaphire' Ealy began writing as an adolescent to sort out uncommon thoughts she was afraid to share with friends and family. Over time, she shed her fears and began to inscribe her hurt, visions, and vulnerability into the raw, edgy, uninhibited and sometimes vulgar style she has become known for. Her spoken word journey began as part of the 90’s Los Angeles poetry scene where she frequented such legendary venues as Do Boy’s Dozens, The World Stage and 5th Street Dick’s.
Sugasaphire was raised in Imperial Courts (Watts), and The Jungles in Los Angeles. During the late '80s, her family moved out of a drug and gang infested neighborhood to Nipomo, California. Now surrounded by agriculture and unknown faces and a new environment, Kila was faced with the challenge of beginning a new life. An outcast to many, she began writing to sort out her feelings and the changes she was facing.
As a single mother of three daughters and a son, Sugasaphire persisted to earn a AA in Liberal Arts and a Sign Language Interpreter certification from Cal State San Bernardino. Afterward, she worked as a valued Special Education Instructor for a decade with Riverside Unified School and currently with Los Angeles Unified School District. Currently, Sugasaphire, an alumnus of the Riverside Renaissance Writers group, is an essential and much sought after voice in the contemporary Los Angeles art scene.
